Just a little Sumthin, Sumthin Bag.

Grandmothers are magnificent creatures.

At least mine were. They did not meet up or speak often which is surprising as both lived their adult married life only a mile from the other.

And when I was old enough to travel on my own from one house to the other there would always be a brown paper bag with “just a little sumthin, sumthin” in it for the other grandmother.

As a young woman I never quite understood why as both grandmothers seemed perfectly capable of magically, procuring almost anything they needed.

Sometimes I would be forced to wait while they searched or thought and then there would be a light bulb moment and they would scramble to get the brown paper bag and place the item inside, folding the top and sometimes ~ even taping it shut as though the contents were none of my business.

Only to arrive at the other Grandmother’s to discover I had been precious-ly carrying a bobbin of thread, a scrap of fabric (both Grandmothers could sew anything), a jar of jelly maybe some candy or tea.

But I didn’t mind because regardless of what was in the “Just a Little Sumthin Sumthin” bag, it would always make the Grandmothers laugh, it brought them joy, it was never much as neither Grandmother was extravagant but to see their faces break with a smile and their eyes twinkle in joy or mischievousness was always such a beautiful thing.

When I was older I asked my Grandmothers why they would send the little brown paper bags and both said the same thing “Because sometimes women just need a little sumthin, sumthin to know someone is thinking of them and wants to bring them joy.”

So make your own or buy one at the Rusty Pumpkin and share with someone you want to show a little JOY

No Shaking Sneaking or Peeking!
